The Wackness is set in New York, in the summer of 1994 ((ndash)) think hip hop, the pungent aroma of marijuana and newly elected mayor Rudolph Giuliani right at the start of his war on Ghetto Blasters, graffiti and public drunkenness.
Take one troubled high school student, Luke Shapiro (Peck) a teenage pot dealer. Add one Dr. Jeffrey Squires (Kingsley), a psychiatrist and kindred lost soul. Mix well with weed and therapy sessions and, as the two begin to explore both New York City and their own depression, you have the makings of one wacky movie.
The Wackness evokes the spell of the mid 90s ((ndash)) not cell phones but pagers; Tupac and Biggie are still alive; Kurt Cobain has just died. The film is a funny, moving, and offbeat tale of two lost souls stumbling towards maturity.
Oh, and for those who are really into this sort of music, it has an exuberant hip hop score!
