In 2004 an horrific movie was released that not only distressed me no end, but fascinated my lust for horror and gore enough to see the subsequent sequels it spawned. That movie was Saw. Repo! The Genetic Opera has nothing to do with Saw, except that the director of the first three sequels to Saw also directed this film. The relevance here (or, at least, the rationalised relevance in my mind) is that if you enjoyed the Saw movies for the sadistic torture-esque bloodbaths that they were, the concept of Repo! is sure to intrigue you as much as it has intrigued me.

In the year 2056 ((ndash)) the not so distant future ((ndash)) an epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Out of the tragedy, a saviour emerges: GeneCo, a biotech company that offers organ transplants ((ndash)) for a price. Those who miss their payments are scheduled for repossession and hunted by villainous Repo Men. In a world where surgery addicts are hooked on painkilling drugs and murder is sanctioned by law, a sheltered young girl searches for the cure to her own rare disease as well as information about her family's mysterious history. After being sucked into the haunting world of GeneCo she is unable to turn back, as all of her questions will be answered at the wildly anticipated spectacular event: The Genetic Opera.

For those who enjoy musicals and hard horror-gore flicks, this movie will be awesome beyond words: a large onslaught of songs, violence, gore, language and sexual and drug references. Think about it: this is what Little Shop of Horrors would have been if it hadn't been directed by the guy who played Miss Piggy. Don't get me wrong, I loved Little Shop of Horrors, but I know that I'll love Repo! The Genetic Opera for completely different reasons!

To quote Liza Minnelli: "Put down the knitting, the book and the broom. Time for a holiday. Life is a Cabaret, old chum. Come to the Cabaret." Except in this case the Cabaret is Repo! The Genetic Opera.
