A man on the run from something takes his young son with him.
Um, that's basically it for the plot. There are flashbacks that give a good and intriguing back story to the characters, with new scenes that sometimes explain earlier ones, but as for the continuing story, that's basically it.
But there's other stuff here that compensates for the lack of a story. The most compelling reason to see this film is the landscape, brilliantly filmed by Greig Fraser. If you've ever been to the Flinders Ranges, you'll recognize the natural beauty of the area, and if you've never been there, you'll want to. The scenes on the salt lake are simply breathtaking!
The acting is also top rate. Hugo Weaving is in form as the father torn between tenderness and brutality when trying to deal with his young son, and Tom Russell is a new child actor worth keeping an eye on.
There are some plot developments that are more plot-convenience than reality (that mobile phone lasting so long without re-charging is pretty impressive) but overall this is worth a visit to Coombs, particularly since it would lose a lot if you didn't see it on the big screen.
