Remember The Devil Wears Prada from a few years back? Remember Meryl Streep’s amazing performance as the demanding, scary fashion magazine editor? Well, the character she played was pretty much based on the focus person of this documentary, Anna Wintour.
The September Issue records the goings-on around setting up the Autumn 2007 fashion issue of “Vogue” magazine. It shows the machinations of both the magazine and fashion industries, but its main focus points are Wintour and her senior stylist Grace Coddington, a woman who, by looks alone, you would not pick out from a crowd as the main sounding board of a fashion guru!
Now I’m not usually interested in fashion shows, catalogues and skinny models, so I’ll admit that this wasn’t the most engaging of movies for me. However I still got quite a few insights into another world (one that I’ll probably never be part of), plus I did get some mean, condescending pleasure from the bits involving Sienna Miller! Anyway, judging by the reactions of the largely female audience I saw this with, I’m not the target demographic. So if this sounds like an area you’d be interested in visiting, then come along. (Apparently, the ‘faaabulous’ dresses are worth coming for alone, so there you go!)
