Clash of the Titans is a remake of the 1981 cult classic of the same name. The film follows Greek mythological hero Perseus, played by Australian ‘he’s so hot right now’ actor Sam Worthington.
After the three Olympians were defeated by Hades’ monster, the Kraken, Zeus (Neeson), Poseidon, and Hades (Fiennes) were designated areas where they could rule; Zeus created and ruled humans, Poseidon ruled the sea and Hades was forced to rule the Underworld.
Hades brings an ultimatum to the city of Argos: either sacrifice their Princess to his Kraken or forfeit their city in 10 days. Perseus agrees to help stop Hades’ nefarious plans in order to save the princess and city and to avenge the death of his parents at the hands of Hades. Soon Perseus, with his winged horse Pegasus, sets out on an epic journey battling gorgons, giant scorpions and the giant Kraken, this time without the help of a little mechanical owl… what was up with that?
This remake is souped-up in every way that you can imagine – the motives for Perseus’s actions are darker, the look is grittier, the monsters are obviously much more detailed and the action is ramped all the way up. Such scenes are shot in your usual shaky-cam manner with most criticism being aimed at the redundant and mediocre 3D conversion in post. Thankfully, due to the ANU Film Group’s ‘classic’ cinema experience, no such distractions are made available. So bring on the Kraken, Medusa and Sam Worthington in muscle armour and underpants and witness these Titans clash!
