Recently retired court worker Benjamin Esposito (Darin) plans to write a novel about an unsolved rape and murder case from 25 years ago that haunts him to this very day. Working with his old boss Irene (Villamil), for whom he still holds a flame, Esposito tries to piece together their collective memories of the crime, assisted by the husband of the victim, Ricardo Morales (Rago), and his old colleague and friend, the alcoholic Pablo (Guillermo Francella). But the direction of their investigation and memories stray into unexpected places…
The Secret in Their Eyes won this year’s Best Foreign Language Oscar (a small upset over strong favourites The White Ribbon and A Prophet, both of which are also on our programme this semester). It’s an engaging tale, told with complexity and intrigue. The story is split into two time frames, but is easy enough to follow (watch for the colour of Darin’s hair to tell whether you are in the present or past!) – in fact, the flipping between periods adds another level of intelligent satisfaction to the story. It didn’t end where I would have liked it to (one scene too many, in my opinion) but this doesn’t take much away from all that comes before it. Well worth a look.
