In the early 80s Sylvester Stallone arguably helped create the action movie with First Blood, the first entry in the Rambo series. Whilst only credited with one confirmed kill in the movie (and it is debated about whether or not Rambo killed the man or not), the movie did go on to spawn two 80s action sequels (and a fourth sequel recently; more bloody and real than the previous entries) that brought us into a new era of action cinema: the Action Hero. Now Sylvester Stallone comes back to what he helped start with The Expendables, an all-star cast action packed movie in the vain of the classic 80s and 90s blockbusters. At no stage does The Expendables try to take itself too seriously, but merely just tries to present a roaring good time.
I could mention something about plot at this point, but it’s not important. What is important is the following list. Stallone. Schwarzenegger. Willis. Li. Statham. Lundgren. Rourke. Along with very special guests – ‘fights’, ‘guns’ and ‘explosions’.
With the first on-screen appearance of Stallone, Willis and Schwarzenegger together, this movie oozes awesome action fun. Make the most important decision of your year be this: treat yourself to this movie, and bathe in the glory that is the love-letter to action movies past. Remember, they’re all getting too old, this could be the last great action movie of our time!
