Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl star in the action-assassin-romantic-comedy Killers, following in the footsteps of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr & Mrs Smith and, more recently, Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise in Knight and Day. Jen Kornfeldt (Heigl) travels with her parents to Nice after the failure of a spontaneous relationship, where she encounters Spencer (Kutcher), a contract killer. The pair soon fall in love and get married (as you do) and we fast forward three years where they appear to be settled and enjoying a ‘normal life’. But as these things go, all is not what it seems: sooner or later, Spencer is attacked and the pair have to snap into action…
With a director firmly footed in light comedy (Legally Blonde, Monster-in-Law) rather than action, this takes a different tack to the films mentioned above. Don’t expect to be blown away by the incredible action scenes – this is most certainly a comedy first, action movie second. It has more in common with The Whole Nine Yards as our heroes try to avoid their potential killers (though I’d much rather have Spencer on my side than Matthew Perry if I’m ever being hunted!).
If you’re in the mood for some ridiculous antics then pop along to the Film Group, strap yourself in, and enjoy the ride!
