Tom (Broadbent) and Gerri (Sheen) are a married couple who have found their happiness in each other, their small allotment garden and their simple lives. But around them, their friends’ lives are less serene. Over four Sundays, one for each season, we get a glimpse of the way that fate affects various people.
Mike Leigh has been telling stories of the foibles of the English for something like 40 years, and this, his latest, is a broad social panorama, as tiny incidents in interpersonal relationships (cups of tea in the garden, shared jokes) become indicative of emotional despair, of the grind of life and the way that happiness is often a matter of luck rather than something assigned to the deserving. With a little social comedy to go with the emotional turmoil, and some fine British actors giving spot-on performances, this is for those who like their cinema small-and-detailed.

** DUE TO A LAST-MINUTE CHANGE BEYOND OUR CONTROL, WE ARE UNABLE TO SCREEN '14 BLADES' AS THE SECOND FEATURE ON THIS DATE (SATURDAY 28 MAY) AS SCHEDULED. IN ITS PLACE, WE WILL BE SCREENING 'THE LOST BLADESMAN' **
THE LOST BLADESMAN is set in ancient China during the warring period of the three kingdoms. To unify the country in turmoil, the tyrannical General Cao Cao attempts to recruit the greatest warrior in the land, Guan Yun (Yen). Guan Yun's loyalties, however, lie with Liu Bei, his sworn brother and Cao Cao's chief rival.
In an effort to persuade the peerless warrior to fight for him, Cao Cao takes his beloved Qi Lan hostage. Reluctantly, Guan Yun leads Cao Cao's forces to victory and then sets out with Qi Lan to rejoin Liu Bei. Having witnessed his prowess first-hand, Cao Cao now deems Guan Yun too great a threat to live and sends all of the forces at the emperor's command to ensure that he does not complete his journey.
