Despicable Me was the first feature film from the new animation studio Illumination Entertainment. Not only was the film cleverly animated and well scripted with humourous events and dialogue, it also (and most importantly) had protagonists that one could relate to. Russell Brand obviously struck a chord with the studio during the making of Despicable Me, and was asked to return to the sound booth to take on the voice of the Easter Bunny in their second animated feature, Hop.

Unlike the fully animated Despicable Me, in Hop only the Easter Bunny is animated, with the other protagonists being live action (similar to another bunny film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit).

Hop is the story of the Easter Bunny, happily preparing for another year's egg delivery season until disaster strikes - he is run down by a car, and no longer able to perform his chocolate-related duties (let alone the titular activity he is well known for). As everyone knows (well, everyone who has seen The Santa Clause at the very least), if you injure an important holiday-related being it becomes your responsibility to drop everything and ensure no permanent damage is done to said holiday. And so out-of-work slacker Fred (Marsden) finds himself with a rather demanding houseguest. Will Easter survive? Will Fred? Most importantly, will we get our chocolate?

Two British comic book geeks are on a road trip through the US on their way to Comic-Con, and, as one does, find themselves getting a little too close to Area 51 at the same time as an alien escapes. Fortunately for these two, it isn't the face-ripping-disembowelling kind made famous by Ridley Scott, James Cameron etc. Instead it's a chummy, relaxed alien named Paul. Unfortunately, the US government has been keeping Paul hidden for 60 years, and it would prefer that he remains under wraps, and therefore a national manhunt is in hot pursuit of two geeks and an alien in a rented RV.

It's been four years since Nick Frost and Simon Pegg were last on screen together in Hot Fuzz. Their mix of geeky banter and mildly homoerotic bonding has been a joy to behold. Can the magic be recaptured? Well, unfortunately this doesn't come out til after the deadline for reviews, but... well I'm going to lay a guess that, yes, this is comic wonder incarnate and amusement will be had by all. Plus, well, the last time someone put Sigourney Weaver in a sci-fi comedy we got Galaxy Quest, and that worked out rather well, so here's hoping we get something like that again.
