No, it’s not about a bloke who loves a big tobacco company. I Love You Phillip Morris is based on the bizarre life story of Steven Jay Russell, a conman who realises he is gay and falls in love with a bloke actually called Phillip Morris – then goes to great lengths to afford his new love everything he desires. I guess the two possibilities share a common nickname, but it is probably one we’d get in trouble for printing.
Jim Carrey plays Russell, a conman who leaves his wife (Mann) after it dawns on him that ladies aren’t really his thing. He moves to Miami and lives it up in the local gay scene, but finds he needs a greater cash flow to keep up with the lifestyle he has chosen – especially expensive boyfriend Jimmy (Rodrigo Santoro). He is quickly sprung and sent to prison, however, where he meets the true love of his life, Phillip Morris (McGregor). Unable to bear being separated from Morris, Russell enacts numerous clever schemes to get himself and Morris out of jail, taking his cons to new financial heights. And more jailbreaks.
I Love You Phillip Morris is the best thing Carrey has done in more than a decade. The film is hilarious and surprisingly heart-warming, given it was written and directed by the people who brought us Bad Santa. The film was rather short-changed by its distributors in most parts of the world, who were evidently not willing to back its gay themes, so enjoy this rare opportunity to see a film destined to become a cult classic.
