After promoting his latest book "Certified Copy" at a press conference, British author James Miller (Shimell) takes an impromptu daytrip with French gallery owner Elle (Binoche) through Tuscany. They discuss art, relationships and truth, the latter becoming a fluid notion as the day goes on...
Binoche won Best Actress at Cannes last year for this role, and she deserved it, as this is her best performance since The English Patient. The movie is like a middle-aged Before Sunrise/Sunset, with a role-playing quirk thrown in (which I won't reveal, but will advise that you'll need someone at the end of the movie to debate the question 'Were they or weren't they?'). As for those among you who, for their cinematic experiences, like a bit of intelligence and challenge mixed in with emotional engagement and entertainment, this film is one that you will no doubt want to discuss afterwards.
Almost an anti-Eat Pray Love, it seems to me that award-winning director Abbas Kiarostami has attempted to make an insightful comment on the fragile foundations that most emotional relationships - both short and long-term - are based on. All it takes, it seems, is for a little bit of self-absorbed indignity to start rocking the boat. Certified Copy is one of the best films released so far this year. See this with someone you either love and/or respect the intellect of.
