This new epic adventure takes place in the remains of what used to be the US. After a series of natural disasters and war, the ravaged remnants of the former superpower have coalesced into a group of 12 districts controlled by the tyrannical Capitol. As part of the peace agreement resulting from the last uprising, each district is forced every year to send one male and one female representative aged 12-18 to a televised event, the Hunger Games, to fight to the death against one other.
Katniss (Lawrence) is a wary 16-year-old from District 12 - the smallest, least powerful district. Adept at secretly hunting in the wilderness outside the district fences, she is more concerned about putting food on the table than about the Capitol and its violent Games. But when her 12 year-old sister is chosen to participate in this year's Games, Katniss volunteers to take her place. The only rule now: kill or be killed.
Based on the best-selling young adult series, this thrilling adventure follows the journey of a teenager into adulthood through a cruel game in which she must face twenty-three other competitors, many of whom have been trained all their life for this. Film Group members may find thematic similarities to the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale, however this clever and thrilling satire of the extremes of reality television is a gripping tale of survival at all costs.
