21 Jump Street is loosely based on the police drama television series that screened in the mid 1980s. Popular for its retro hair and fashion; it was also credited with launching Johnny Depp's acting career.
The movie revolves around an undercover police unit called '21 Jump Street' comprised of youthful-looking cops whose job is to infiltrate high schools with the aim of stopping the nastier youth-related crimes. Those familiar with the television series will see that any similarity to the movie ends there.
The film instead takes a different tack in the guise of a buddy cop/comedy flick, focusing on police officers Schmidt (Hill - Superbad, Moneyball) and Jenko (Tatum - The Vow). Their undercover assignment has them posing as high school students in order to take down a synthetic drug ring and apprehend the leader; with their chief suspect being Eric (Franco), the most popular boy in school.
The movie follows Hill and Jenko's exploits as they not only relive their high school days but work hard to be accepted into Eric's inner circle, many of whom also appear to be involved in the drug ring.
Movie aficionados should watch out for Depp's cameo revival of his character Officer Tom Hanson from the original series. This is a great film for those looking for some light-hearted fun with a bit of an edge.
