Hope Springs is set in the seaside town of Great Hope Springs. But the title has a double meaning - also referring to a sense of optimism for the chances of rescuing the stale marriage of Kay and Arnold (Streep and Jones), a couple of more than 30 years from the US mid-west.

Given the two leads, you could be forgiven for expecting a screaming, dramatic film examining in raw detail the difficulties of keeping a marriage alive. You would, however, be wrong - Hope Springs takes its impressive cast down a firmly comedic path. Mr Jones, well-known for playing threatening characters with an edge of menace, has done award-winning comedy (Men in Black). Ms Streep also has comedy credentials (She-Devil and It's Complicated).

The plot is simple, as the two 60-somethings go through a very funny but thought-provoking weekend of marriage and sex therapy under the guidance and scrutiny of relationship therapist Dr Bernie Field (Carell). A weekend of more interest to bored and unhappy Kay, who has dragged the cantankerous and sceptical Arnold out of his much-loved regular routine to submit to the therapy.

Directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada), don't miss the chance to watch Ms Streep and Mr Jones bring their distinctive character portrayals to comedy, and see if they can reignite the spark of their marriage.
