We all know Michael Caine as an English actor who plays Batman’s butler in the recent Dark Knight trilogy, and for this reason I kept thinking Christian Bale was going to make an appearance as the masked crusader. He doesn’t… or does he?
In Mr. Morgan’s Last Love, Matthew Morgan (Caine) and Pauline Laubie (Poésy) strike up an odd but sweet friendship in a dramatic and moving film based on Françoise Dorner’s novel “La Douceur Assassine”. Matthew is an American widower living in Paris who meets Pauline, a dance teacher, on a bus ride home. Both Matthew and Pauline are looking for someone to fill the void in their lives and therefore pour a lot of their love and feelings into one another. However, when you invest yourself so completely in someone in order to take the pain away, you may just be trying to cover up scars with makeup, and in this case it can lead to heartbreaking consequences.
The film is shot on location in Paris and the cinematography offers a warm-hearted and romantic ambiance that only a place like Paris can provide. Mr. Morgan’s Last Love will take you on an emotional roller coaster that uncovers the fragility of life and why it must be lived to the fullest, so I suggest you have a tissue handy… or two.
