This is another of our award-winning foreign films. A winner at festivals in Berlin, Bombay, Havana, Hawaii, Lima, San Sebastian and Palm Springs as well as being Chile’s submission for this year’s Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award.
Gloria is a 58-year-old divorced woman who is still working and wanting to meet people and have fun nights out. She has no desire to be alone, so she embarks on a whirl of singles’ parties until she meets Rodolfo, an older divorced man who, while wanting to move on in life, is still obligated to his past.
Gloria decides to give this new relationship her all, which leaves her similarly torn between hope for the future and nostalgia for the past. At this time in their lives, what is the right balance? These are not the Hollywood beautiful people; be prepared, you might see more of these older bodies than you want to see.
Wonderful performances and thought-provoking issues especially for the older members of the ANUFG audience wondering what the future will bring. We are (mostly) living longer and should consider how we will spend our time and what we want and expect in the future.
I must say that I like the way that Gloria is not satisfied to slip quietly into her dotage, that I too want to grab what I can get out of life as I enjoy my later years. Where do you stand? (You younger members can instead think of what your parents would do in these situations).
