Foxcatcher, based on a memoir co-authored by Mark Schultz about the tragic loss of his brother, is a psychological drama in which Mark reveals what made him and his brother, Dave, wrestling champions. That journey ends at the du Pont’s titular estate, Foxcatcher Farms, where the triumphant story takes an unexpected twist.

This inconceivable story about Olympic gold medallists and their wealthy benefactor creates a riveting film. Masterfully crafted and hauntingly cold, Foxcatcher is unlike any film released recently. Channing Tatum as Mark Schultz has given a splendid performance and will be one to watch at this year’s Academy Awards. Steve Carell gives a most disturbing portrayal of the tycoon John du Pont in one of his best performances to date.

The film drags on in parts with some sections being like becoming bogged in thick mud. However it is an ingenious combination of intense sport, American iconography, a chilling vision of American wealth and the dark side of the human psyche. Watching Foxcatcher is a must, but it is one of those movies that viewing it once may be more than enough.
