Exodus: Gods and Kings is a biblically-inspired film directed by Ridley Scott. It stars Christian Bale (American Hustle) as Moses and Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby) as Ramses II. It is a modern-day sweeping historical epic, and one that wasn’t only shot in controlled sound stage environments – part of the filming took place in real-world locations in Spain. This is a film spectacular with more than enough edge-of-your-seat moments to please any Ridley Scott fan.
What is a surprising element in this film is that the main protagonists, Moses and Ramses II, show a very fallible humanity which surpasses its biblical theme. It felt like an intimate glimpse into the bonds that tie brothers even while they are standing on opposing sides of the battlefield. This is more of a mythological tale than a biblical retelling. I enjoyed it so much that I saw it twice and will come again at Coombs.
