This special event screening will be followed by a Q&A with Dylan Parker and James Norton, the Canberra-based paper plane enthusiasts whose passion for the art of paper plane making inspired the film. They will join us for a post-screening discussion about the film, their journey, and more. Click HERE for more details.
For most people this film won’t be on your ‘Must See’ list, in fact you probably just stumbled across it while flipping through your Film Group booklet. That said, this is actually a really good movie that appeals to adults just as much as kids. There’s just something a little magical about paper planes that soar, twist and glide in spectacular fashion no matter what your age.
In an Outback town, Dylan (Oxenbould), fascinated by flight, discovers he’s a paper plane maker extraordinaire. So good in fact, he qualifies for the junior championships. However both the distracted state of his depressed dad Jack (Worthington) and a dire lack of funds stand in the way. Not to be beaten, he works his way to Sydney to vie for the chance to participate in the world championships in Tokyo.
There are many reasons to see this film – the acting is really good (the kids aren’t obnoxious which is good acting in itself), the pacing is just right and the story is really involving. This movie has the makings of a major tearjerker, but much to the relief of my friends there was enough humour and lightheartedness to save them from any such embarrassment I could have caused in a busy cinema. Most importantly, this film will inspire you to grab the first piece of paper you can find and try to launch it into the stratosphere.
Oh, did I mention the Film Group booklets are definitely not, I repeat NOT, made of paper...
