Marvel’s first superhero team – Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and The Thing, collectively known as The Fantastic Four – is once again back on the big screen.

Upon returning from a teleportation experiment to an alternative dimension, the team composed of Reed Richards (Teller from The Spectacular Now), Susan Storm (Mara from “House of Cards”), Johnny Storm (Jordan from Fruitvale Station) and Ben Grimm (Bell from Defiance) develop unique superpowers that include the ability to stretch, generate flames and flight, invisibility and force fields, and unbreakable, stone-like flesh. Together, these once very normal, very human people must learn to control their new abilities and work together as a somewhat dysfunctional surrogate family, in order to save the world from a former-friend-turned-enemy.

With a fresh, talented cast and the director of the Chronicle in tow, things are looking up for this reboot. At the very least, there is plenty of action and enthralling special effects to entertain thrill-seekers. However, this is not just another superhero film, but an unexpectedly dark and grounded scientific adventure as well, where the capabilities of man and their consequences are key motifs – and the world cannot be viewed as black and white.

They’re back! Another remake – how original. Sarcasm aside, the direction Hollywood is taking by cashing in on awesome 1980s films is so frustrating, especially when I truly love the originals they are remaking.

(Did you hear they are remaking Sister Act?!)

Firstly, for those of you who somehow haven’t seen the 1982 original thriller/horror classic, Poltergeist follows a family whose home is haunted, and how they have to rescue their youngest daughter when the ghosts take her captive. How does this 2015 remake compare to the classic Steven Spielberg-produced horror?

For starters, this film stars Sam Rockwell who is, pretty much, amazing in everything he does. Secondly, being 2015 we have way better special effects, so supernatural believability is paramount; and finally, this film is actually scary, filled with super creepiness and a looming sense of terror throughout. It is evil and uncomfortable and full of jump scares, having to keep up with the current, high standards set by the likes of Paranormal Activity and the Insidious films.

Is it as good as the original? Well, it’s no classic, but as a standalone, creepy horror flick, it is well worth the watch, at least for comparative purposes. The tag line for the film is “They know what scares you.” It turns out they really do.
