The Intern is a comedy about a young CEO who hires a ‘senior’ intern. More specifically, it tells the story of Ben Whittaker (De Niro), a 70-year-old widower who has discovered that retirement isn’t everything he’d hoped for. Ben applies for a job as an intern at an online fashion business, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Hathaway) to give him a new purpose – and ends up with much more than he expected.
As cheesy as this all sounds as I write out its plot synopsis, the film is actually a really fun and enjoyable way to spend your evening. De Niro is great, as always, and the rest of the film’s multi-generational cast is also really good. Even though the film is littered with ‘old guy who doesn’t quite get the modern world’ references, it’s mostly done in a charming and smile-inducing way.
The Intern is both written and directed by Nancy Meyers (It’s Complicated, Something’s Gotta Give, What Women Want) who is no stranger to the heartfelt comedy genre or to bringing us successful and very watchable films.
So if light-hearted laughs with a bit of sentimentality thrown in is something on your To Do list for this week then I highly recommend this film. And if your list is full of more practical stuff… then I say you should give it a go anyway. Washing your hair, updating your CV, or making crazy sock puppets can wait for Sunday.
