In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) woke up in District 13 – long thought to have been destroyed by the Capitol. President Coin (Moore), leader of District 13 along with former gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman), asked Katniss to become the symbol of their rebellion, the Mockingjay. In her quest for revenge against President Snow (Donald Sutherland), she reluctantly agrees – on the one condition that they rescue Peeta (Hutcherson), who has been captured by the Capitol. In the haunting last scene of the film, we learned that the Capitol has brainwashed Peeta to attack Katniss whenever he sees her.
Personally, I felt Part 1 was nothing but a setup for Part 2. It did not have much of a story and only served for the filmmakers to milk more money out of their loyal fans. That said, I definitely think they made it up here for the last film in the series. It was how I imagined things to be as I read the books, but better!
Following on from Katniss’s plan to free all of the Districts from the rule of Capitol, she comes to the realisation that all the suffering has stemmed from one source: Snow. Once you remove him from the equation, peace will inevitably follow. Will she achieve her goal? Will the rebellion succeed? Will Peeta ever heal and come to love Katniss again? And the biggest question of all – who will she choose, Peeta or Gale?
To find out the answers, you could read the books. Or, come let the cinematic experience satisfy your hunger. May the odds be ever in your favour.
