The director-actor duo behind the fantastic Rush from a few years ago is back with their latest project, a movie in which Thor meets Poseidon – well, kind of...
In the Heart of the Sea is based on the true story of the Essex, an American whaleship which sinks after it is attacked by a sperm whale in the Pacific Ocean in 1820 – the same tale said to be the inspiration behind Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick”. In the film, we see a former crew member recounting the tale to Melville, narrating the adventures of the ship’s incompetent but arrogant Captain (Walker) and his skilful First Mate (Hemsworth).
Their journey hits a major hurdle when a sperm whale attacks their ship almost as if out of vengeance. But while the protagonists of “Moby Dick” went on to hunt down the whale, the crew of the Essex must deal with a very different aftermath. Between storms, starvation, delusions and despair, the crew finds themselves pushed to their very limits – physically and mentally – to stay alive. To do so, they may have to commit unspeakable acts that will forever change their lives.
Director Ron Howard’s sharp eye for detail is ever present throughout, amazingly capturing on film the dynamics of whale hunting like never before. Thrilling, epic and gorgeously shot, In the Heart of the Sea is old-fashioned cinematic spectacle at its best.
