Opa! The long awaited My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is hitting the Film Group all geared up to entertain you. The original Greek Wedding was an unexpected blockbuster, turning Nia Vardalos into a star and the film into the highest grossing romantic comedy of all time – a record that impressively still stands 14 years on.
In the first film we followed the Portokalos family as they prepared a wedding ceremony for Toula (Vardalos) and her not-so-Greek fiancé, Ian (Corbett). Fast forward a few years and this ‘greek-quel’ now sees Toula and Ian trying to keep their teenage daughter, Paris (Kampouris), on the straight and narrow. Unfortunately, life isn’t all olives and moussaka for Toula and Ian either, who find themselves also facing marital problems.
But when Toula’s parents discover that the priest who officiated their marriage conveniently forgot to sign the paperwork, it’s time to bring the whole family together for yet another Greek wedding – even bigger and fatter than the first!
The entire cast is back. The romance is back. And the laughs are definitely back in abundance too, with all sorts of intergenerational awkwardness along the way. If laughter yoga really works, you should have no trouble at all burning away a whole lot of calories seeing this film.

Meet Michelle Darnell (McCarthy), a titan of industry and the wealthiest woman in America who says whatever she wants and does whatever she wants. It’s a life that has resulted in her having a lot of money, but not a lot of popularity (okay, pretty much none).
One day her entire world comes crashing down when she is sent to prison for insider trading. When she is released six months later, she finds herself having to start again from scratch. But what do you do when you have nothing, no one likes you, and you are sleeping on the couch of a former employee-turned-maybe-friend? You reinvent yourself!
A chance epiphany at a Girl Guides meeting leads Michelle to embark on an all new business venture: the production and sale of brownies to raise funds for ‘charitable’ causes (specifically, herself). Recruiting ruthless young girls and drawing on her years of big business know-how, Michelle and her legion of ‘Darnell’s Darlings’ will stop at nothing for dominance of the neighbourhood brownie market.
Melissa McCarthy stole the show with her loud, obnoxious characters in hit films like Bridesmaids, The Heat and Spy. And if we’re being honest, her character here is along similar lines too, so if you aren’t a fan already then you might be better off staying home and having some of your own Girl Guide biscuits with a glass of milk. But for those who ‘get’ her brand of humour, you’re bound to have a great time with this one too.
