This screening of Everybody Wants Some!! is proudly presented by the Australian American Association – Canberra Division
How do you follow up a universally applauded, multi-Oscar winning film like Boyhood? In Richard Linklater’s case, you make an ensemble comedy about a group of college baseball players set in the 1980s. Referred by some as a spiritual sequel to Linklater’s beloved Dazed and Confused, and proclaimed by Linklater as a semi-sequel to 2014’s Boyhood, Everybody Wants Some!! is essentially a peek at the aimless lives of goofy college boys getting to know each other and having a blast while at it. It is easily one of the best laughs you’ll have at the movies this year.
Blake Jenner stars as Jake, a freshman pitcher at a fictional Texas college, and the film follows his journey from when he first arrives on campus and moves in with his teammates, to their many adventures through college parties, picking up girls, and breaking rules. Plot-wise, nothing particularly significant happens; but in classic Linklater fashion, the movie is extremely nostalgic and funny and human. Unlike many other movies about college sports teams, the characters are not stereotyped clichés, and the humour is witty and authentic.
Linklater is one of the few directors working today that has consistently given us great cinematic experiences in wide ranging genres, and Everybody Wants Some!! is his screwball college comedy that will have you feeling nostalgic about the best years of your youth in all the good ways.
