It’s official: Transformers: The Last Knight is the best film of the year. Master director Michael Bay has made one of the greatest action/sci-fi films of all time, up there alongside The Matrix, Terminator 2 and Aliens. Don’t be surprised to see Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Hopkins and Bay up on the Oscar podium come February…
Who am I kidding? After 10 years of this stuff, you know what you’re getting into. And if you don’t by now, just stick to the bit above.
The fifth instalment in the hugely popular franchise (the last two grossed more than $1 billion each) sees humans and Transformers at war. Inventor Cade Yeager (Wahlberg) joins forces with an English historian (Hopkins) and an Oxford professor (Haddock) to locate the all-powerful staff of Merlin (I kid you not) that is key to ending the conflict and saving the world. As it turns out, the Transformers’ existence on Earth dates back much further than we thought.
Throw in copious slow-mo shots, sunsets, shouting, explosions, bombastic music, banter, and giant robots duking it out in semi-coherent yet visually arresting action sequences, and you’ve pretty much got the gist. If nothing else, Transformers: The Last Knight is sure to give you plenty of bang for your buck... which isn’t hard to do, given that this is a free screening!
