“When given a choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.”
Based on the novel of the same name, Wonder is a wonder-ful (haha) film that embodies the idiom ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’. It centres on August ‘Auggie’ Pullman (Tremblay) who was born with congenital facial deformities, and is now facing his first year of middle school after being home-schooled since young.
Due to his looks, Auggie experiences all the drama that comes with attending school, and then some. He is constantly stared at and bullied by kids. However, amidst them all, a few angels shine through and we gain comfort in knowing that the world isn’t all bad.
One aspect I really enjoyed about this film was that it also explored the lives of those around Auggie: his mother (Roberts), father (Wilson) and sister (Vidovic). It paints a realistic picture that while Auggie himself faces the most challenges, his supportive family members each have their own challenges too.
Wonder is a film that tugs at the heartstrings, so if you’re prone to tears at a movie then be sure to arm yourself with tissues. Don’t worry, I’m sure there will be others sobbing too.
