PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE EMBASSY OF IRELAND

Be prepared: this film is an emotional journey. Irish author Sebastian Barry’s brilliant novel has been transformed into a touching film, perfectly complemented by a wonderful cast, moody cinematography and a moving musical score.

Roseanne McNulty (Redgrave, who is absolutely fantastic) must vacate the soon-to-be demolished mental institution in Roscommon, Ireland, that she’s called home for much of her life. The hospital’s psychiatrist, Dr. William Grene (Bana) is called in to assess her condition, and finds himself intrigued by her. As Grene delves deeper into Roseanne’s past in an effort to help gain her freedom, we discover the story of her younger self (Mara) and the life she led of extraordinary love and great injustice.

The material is heavy, and rightly so. For those with no knowledge the conflict between the Republic of Ireland and Britain around WWII, it may seem a tad confusing at first. But it is an engaging story that will all eventually fall into place if you continue to follow along.

Much like a version of The Notebook rooted in historical events, this is definitely a film for which tissues should be kept at the ready.
