Force Majeure writer-director Ruben Östlund is back again with another uncomfortable but darkly comical look at human nature and 21st century European society.
His latest, The Square, follows Swedish contemporary art museum curator Christian (Bang) as he brings in a new art installation to his museum. The installation, simply a square of neon light tubing laid into the ground in front of the museum, invites passersby to do altruistic deeds. But in this time of triumph things start to spiral out of control for Christian, both personally and professionally, after he falls victim to a confidence trick robbing him of his smartphone and wallet.
With some hilariously awkward scenes, including a performance artist acting like a chimpanzee at a high-class museum gala dinner, The Square is a gutsy piss-take of the world of modern art, postmodernism and cultural elites. It is about the gap between the virtues we espouse to those around us and the actual actions we take when push comes to shove.
Winner of the Palme D’Or at Cannes last year and Best Film at the European Film Awards, this is a fable of our times and an emotional thrill ride not to be missed.
