Lee Israel first gained fame as a biographer, with Katherine Hepburn and Estee Lauder among her subjects. However she became more infamous for her creative writing abilities – penning letters under the names of famous people and selling them to unsuspecting booksellers, along with actual letters she stole from libraries.
This darkly comedic drama is based on Israel’s controversial 2008 memoir of the same name. It features Melissa McCarthy showcasing her dramatic depth with her portrayal of the flawed Israel, supported by Richard E. Grant as Israel’s loyal friend and accomplice Jack.
Nominated for 3 Oscars in 2019, including Best Actress (McCarthy) and Best Supporting Actor (Grant).
