Based on James Baldwin's 1974 novel of the same name, If Beale Street Could Talk is the latest effort of Barry Jenkins, writer and director of the double Academy Award-winning Moonlight.
It’s essentially a love story, and like all true love, that of childhood sweethearts Tish (KiKi Layne) and Fonny (Stephan James) is about to be tested in the fires of adversity. In this case, the furnace is racially charged 1970s Harlem and the fuel is provided by spurious rape charges. With the help of family, pregnant Tish must fight to prove Fonny’s innocence so they can be reunited in time for their baby’s birth.
Nominated for 3 Oscars in 2019, including Best Supporting Actress (Regina King).
