Known for his idiosyncratic, auteur, Greek Weird Wave films like The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Yorgo Lanthimos directs a film from another person’s script for the first time in his career. Fortunately, this period satire loses none of his biting satire.

Set in the court of Great Britain’s chronically ill Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), The Favourite brings to the foreground the complicated relationship between Anne and the two women known to compete for her affections – long-time friend Sarah Churchill, The Duchess of Marlborough (Rachel Weisz) and Sarah’s aspirational cousin Abigail (Emma Stone).
