** PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE EMBASSY OF PALESTINE **
There’s nothing like a wedding to bring family together. Or in the case of this drama written and directed by Palestinian filmmaker and poet Annemarie Jacir, to expose every fragile fissure in the tense relationship between Abu Shadi (Mohammad Bakri) and his estranged son (Saleh Bakri).
With his daughter about to get married, local Palestinian custom requires that all the wedding invitations must be hand-delivered. When the son arrives from Rome to help him, the pair must spend the first day in many years together to get the invitations out.
Wajib – literally, ‘duty’ in Arabic – was Palestine’s submission to last year’s Academy Awards and while it didn’t make the final cut, it is no less worthy.
