Joe (Joaquin Phoenix) is a tormented Gulf War veteran who now makes a living tracking down missing girls – and, more specifically, killing those involved in the child-sex trade. When the 13-year-old daughter of a New York senator never returns home, Joe’s brutally violent methods are called upon once again, but the job soon takes an unexpected toll on him.
Don’t be fooled – this is no Liam Neeson action-fest. Acclaimed writer-director Lynne Ramsey (We Need to Talk About Kevin) offers an intense, disturbing and uncompromising look at the anguished male psyche, aided by another terrific turn from Phoenix and an assaulting score from Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood.
