Still grieving her son’s death, Rachael (Keira Knightley) reunites in Hamburg with her British colonel husband (Jason Clarke), who has been tasked with overseeing the reconstruction and de-Nazification of the city following the end of WWII.
British Forces have commandeered a house for them to live in, but much to Rachael’s surprise, her husband has allowed its widowed German owner (Alexander Skarsgård) and his daughter to continue staying there. It doesn’t take long before tension and enmity to give way to something more dangerous.
The Aftermath is an old-fashioned wartime romance that often has more in common with soap operas than the works of David Lean – but at least the cast is talented and easy on the eyes.
