** PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE EMBASSY OF JAPAN **
Osamu (Lily Franky) and his family are poor but dishonest, scraping by on the social fringes of Tokyo through petty thievery such as shoplifting. They also have plenty of heart, and when they come across a hungry and shivering young girl who doesn’t seem to have anywhere to go, they take her under their wing. All goes well – until they discover where she has come from.
Powerful and bittersweet, Shoplifters was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language in 2018. It is written and directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, known for his humanist dramas that draw on quiet slices of ordinary life, such as After the Storm, Our Little Sister and Like Father, Like Son – all of which have screened at the ANU Film Group.
