Disney’s beloved 1992 animated classic is transformed into a live-action musical by director Guy Ritchie, who has previously given other folkloric and pop-culture favourites (King Arthur, Sherlock Holmes) a more modern slant.
Once again, the story revolves around a street urchin named Aladdin (Mena Massoud) who poses as a prince to win the heart of a princess (Naomi Scott). The power in his corner, the heavy ammunition in his camp is a genie in a lamp (Will Smith, who makes a more genial genie than the one Robin Williams gave us).

Whilst travelling in Spain, a film director (Adam Driver) stumbles across a copy of ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’, a black-and-white student film that he had made over decade ago. Feeling nostalgic, he seeks out the original cast, and discovers that the lead actor, an old cobbler (Jonathan Pryce), has completely convinced himself that he is Don Quixote – ultimately pulling them both into a time-jumping, reality-altering fantasy.
The behind-the-scenes story of this film is so legendary that it earned its own full-length documentary, Lost in La Mancha. More than 30 years in the making, Terry Gilliam’s magnum opus is surreal, silly and spectacular – and we’ve come to expect nothing less from Monty Python’s mad genius.
