This year sees the 60th anniversary of the creation of Asterix, and there remains something irresistible about the tales of a plucky Gaulish village holding out against the legions of Rome to protect their local druid, whose magic potion confers superhuman strength.
In this film (the fourteenth to be adapted from the comics), the villagers belated realise that having just one druid capable of brewing the potion is a trifle risky, after he falls from a ladder and injures himself. Fortunately, Asterix and Obelix are up to the task and set out on a quest to find a worthy apprentice – unaware that they have picked the worst possible moment to do so.

The Keeper is based on the true story of Bert Trautmann, a German paratrooper captured by the British in 1944 and eventually signed by Manchester City football club in 1949. Rather than returning to Germany after the end of WWII, Bert (David Kross) marries Margaret Friar (Freya Mavor), daughter of the football team manager (John Henshaw) who first noticed his goal-keeping prowess in the POW camp.
It’s a tale of love and courage as Bert perseveres as a goalkeeper, despite many years of prejudice and animosity against him. However Bert and Margaret find their love is put to the ultimate test soon after he helps Manchester City win the 1956 FA cup final. Bring your team scarf and tissues for this one.
