PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE EMBASSY OF INDONESIA
Widowed Marlina (Marsha Timothy) lives in the dry and remote region of Sumba, Indonesia. One day an outlaw turns up and announces he and his friends will soon relieve her of her livestock and show her a good time. Unfortunately, Marlina’s idea of a good time is to behead him and make off across the countryside with his head, with his two surviving crew members in pursuit.
Director Mouly Surya blends elements of the neo-Western with feminist noir in her subversive tale of female empowerment that unfolds in four acts. Hailed by many as the first-ever ‘Satay Western’, this gorgeously shot film was Indonesia’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2018.
