A jabbering tabloid journalist (Hugh Grant) narrates a series of stories about London-based American marijuana kingpin Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey), who wants to get out of the business before weed becomes legal in the UK. But when word gets out about his impending retirement, Pearson and his crew get involved in bribery, blackmail and all manner of shenanigans as everyone – from Russian aristocrats to Asian mafia dons – attempts to take over his kingdom.
After last year’s Aladdin remake, director Guy Ritchie has clearly returned to his roots in the sharp and gritty London underbelly of organised crime. The Gentlemen is a charming and messy masterpiece, with a wild script and an up-for-anything cast, including Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell and Henry Golding – highlighted by the brilliant, adrenaline-fuelled performances from McConaughey and Grant.
