Official Secrets tells the true story of Katherine Gun (Keira Knightley), the British intelligence specialist who exposed an illegal NSA spying operation aimed at coercing the UN Security Council into supporting the 2003 invasion of Iraq by the US and their allies.

After receiving a memo from the NSA requesting Britain collect compromising information on United Nations Security Council members to force their votes, Gun leaked this information to the press, believing her actions would stop a war. Instead, her plan had disastrous consequences for herself and the journalist (Matt Smith) who aided her.
