Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss) is finally moving on after escaping from a violent and controlling relationship when she is notified that her abusive scientist ex-boyfriend (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) has committed suicide. He has left her a generous portion of his vast fortune in his will, but there’s a catch: she loses it if she is ruled to be mentally incompetent.
It’s not long before a series of eerie events leads Cecilia to suspect that the suicide was merely a hoax – and that her tormentor is still alive. But how can she prove that he is real when nobody can see him?
Australian writer-director Leigh Whannell (Upgrade) modernises a classic movie monster with this smart, scary thriller that tackles the real-life horrors experienced by victims of abuse.
