In 1936, as the Third Reich continues its reign of terror, Adolf Hitler is on a quest for the legendary Ark of the Covenant – the resting place of the Ten Commandments – whose supernatural powers, according to legend, can wipe out entire armies. In an attempt to locate the long-lost Ark before the Nazis can, the U.S. Government enlists the help of renowned archaeologist, adventurer and expert in the occult, Dr. Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford).
Indy embarks on a frenzied race against time – from the dangerous mountains of Nepal to the mysterious streets of Cairo – teaming up with former flame Marion (Karen Allen) and old acquaintance Sallah (John Rhys-Davies) along the way, all while being relentlessly pursued by Hitler’s henchmen and Indy’s scheming arch-rival, René Belloq (Paul Freeman).
Conceived by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg to be a celebration of early 20th-century adventure serials, Raiders of the Lost Ark went on to become the most successful film of 1981, even winning five Oscars, on the way to being widely regarded today as one of the greatest films of all time. Celebrating its milestone 40th anniversary this year, there is no better time to revisit the screen debut of everyone’s favourite, fedora-wearing adventurer.
