Director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump) reimagines Roald Dahl’s beloved classic story in this visually innovative fantasy film. A darkly humorous and heartwarming tale set in 1967, it follows a young orphaned boy (Jahzir Bruno) who goes to live with his loving Grandma (Octavia Spencer) in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis.
When the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches around town, she wisely whisks him away to a seaside resort to escape. As luck would have it, however, they arrive at the resort at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch (Anne Hathaway) has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe for a secret meeting. When the boy overhears her nefarious plan to turn the world’s children into mice, he must find a way to stop her before it’s too late.
A note to parents: this film is rated M for “supernatural themes, violence and scary scenes” and may contain visuals that may be disturbing to younger children.
