In a suburban fantasy world inhabited by mystical creatures that have long forgotten how to use magic, shy teenage elf Ian Lightfoot (voiced by Tom Holland) is about to receive a wake-up call in the form of a strange wooden staff left behind by his long-dead father as a present for his 16th birthday. Encouraged by his magic-obsessed older brother Barley (voiced by Chris Pratt), the two boys attempt to harness the power of the staff to bring their father back from the dead so he can spend one last day with them.
After initially botching the spell, Ian and Barley must set out on a peril-laden quest to make their dream a reality. And like any good quest, their journey is filled with magic spells, cryptic maps, impossible obstacles and unimaginable discoveries – just so long as their fearless and overprotective mother (voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfuss) doesn’t find out.
Heartwarming and dazzlingly animated, Pixar’s 22nd feature film is a loving tribute to the magic of family that will no doubt resonate with the young and the young at heart.
