** PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE EMBASSY OF THE KINGDOM OF BELGIUM **
In August 2000, the Kursk nuclear submarine heads out to sea on a naval exercise. It is the pride of the Russian navy – until a practice torpedo explodes, killing most of the crew and leaving just 23 survivors stranded at the bottom of the sea.
Above the surface, the situation is just as bleak: the Russian government rejects an offer of help from their better-equipped British counterparts, refusing to admit their shortcomings. Meanwhile, the wives and families of the seamen become increasingly desperate for information.
Part disaster movie, part political thriller, Kursk is solid and compelling filmmaking from acclaimed Danish director Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt, Another Round), featuring a cast including Matthias Schoenaerts, Lea Seydoux, Colin Firth, Max von Sydow and Michael Nyqvist.
