** PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ROYAL NORWEGIAN EMBASSY **
It's 1926, and famed Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (Pål Sverre Hagen) has gone missing on a trip to the North Pole. As his younger brother Leon (Christian Rubeck) anxiously awaits news, he recounts Roald's life story: from an early fascination with uncharted lands to eventually becoming the first known person to reach the South Pole.
This Norwegian historical biopic offers a fascinating look at the storied existence of one of the world's greatest explorers: a man who has cheated death so many times that he seems more equipped for his harrowing expeditions than everyday life.
Director Espen Sanberg (Kon-Tiki, also starring Hagen) does not gloss over the harshness of Amundsen's expeditions and sacrifices, showcasing a number of Arctic treks with stunning cinematography. And yet, despite his many accomplishments, Amundsen's all-consuming determination to explore – including an ongoing rivalry with the British – eventually drives a wedge between himself and his loved ones.
