For the past four years, heavy metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) travelliing with lead singer/girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) travelling in a campervan across the United States from gig to gig, playing their loud, frenzied music for devoted fans.
But when Ruben suddenly begins to lose his hearing, his world is upended and the inner demons that he has been keeping at bay with his music begin to resurface. Realising the need to seek help, Ruben reluctantly agrees to join a small deaf community overseen by a compassionate Vietnam War veteran (Paul Raci), who attempts to show Ruben that being deaf isn't a handicap.
Led by an incredible performance by Ahmed, Sound of Metal is a grounded, unfiltered look at the experiences of the deaf community. Of particular note is the evocative sound design which puts the audience in Ruben's head as his life is throw into freefall. This utterly compelling film was rightfully nominated for six Oscars this year, including Best Picture – ultimately winning for Best Film Editing and, of course, Best Sound.
