Lily (Susan Sarandon) is a spirited woman in her late 60s who has found her zest for living dampened after a long battle with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). She and her husband Paul (Sam Neill) have summoned their children to their country home for one last weekend before Lily plans to pursue euthanasia and end her life.
But the mood becomes strained when unresolved issues surface and her daughters – uptight Jennifer (Kate Winslet) and wayward Anna (Mia Wasikowska) – become increasingly conflicted about their mother’s perfectly laid plans, threatening to destroy Lily’s peaceful farewell.
A remake of a 2014 Danish film, Blackbird brings together a splendid cast with grace and humour, despite heavy themes and occasional melodrama. A beautiful bookend to our Susan Sarandon showcase, with Thelma & Louise screening the evening before.
